The Need for a New Theatre in London's West End
The last fifty years has seen the creation of subsidised theatres and the rapid rise of productions using thrust and open stage formats, and occasionally theatre in the round. Today there is no specially created venue outside the subsidised sector in the West End that can take this range of productions.
This represents a major lost opportunity for the subsidised sector to cultivate new audiences and to earn additional income. This is vital at a time when all arts organisations are experiencing reductions in subsidy and have to meet more of their running costs directly by transferring productions to the West End.
We plan to create London's first purpose-built transfer theatre for these kinds of non-traditional subsidised productions, with much-needed rehearsal space. This would be a unique facility for London and the UK.
The principle of creating this new kind of theatre has broad support from arts organisations all around the country. We have already received support from:
- Almeida Theatre
- Arts Council England
- Chichester Festival Theatre
- Donmar Warehouse
- Hampstead Theatres
- National Theatre
- Royal Court Theatre
- Royal Shakespeare Company
- Sheffield Theatres (Crucible, Lyceum & Crucible Studio theatres)
- Theatre Royal Stratford East
- Young Vic
