Our Proposals for Sondheim Theatre
The Ambassadors Theatre is located on West Street, next to St Martin's Theatre and close to Seven Dials. It was designed by noted theatre architect WGR Sprague, who also designed St Martin's Theatre, and listed in 1976 at Grade II for its architectural and historic interest.
While the theatre represents the best opportunity to transfer subsidised theatre to the West End, in its current form it cannot accommodate the Sondheim Theatre project.
The existing building will therefore be remodelled and raised in height to become a visual pair with St Martin's Theatre. The design preserves and enhances the existing West Street façade and improves local views. The building will be extended to roughly the basement line in Tower Court, and the street will be upgraded.
Internally, a new auditorium will be created. Influenced by WGR Sprague's architecture and interior design, this will be a highly flexible space to allow productions to be staged in the same format as their originating theatre. The current auditorium's central ceiling dome and associated plasterwork are relocated within a grand stalls bar in the basement.
Set above the auditorium is a rehearsal suite. This meets the demand from companies and addresses the extreme shortage of rehearsal space in London. Public spaces throughout the building will be more generous, and it will be fully accessible.
